Eastern is supposed to be a Christian School, I think its like Non-Denominational or something. But people do and say a lot of things you may not expect from so called Christians. After being here for a while you start to realize that people aren't any different than they would be at a secular school. Students here engage in sexual activity, drugs, alcohol, and not to mention the profanity you might hear in the dining commons. But what suprises me even more than those things is the amount of racism here on campus.
One student of color shared her racist experience with a white student. For privacy we will call her N.
N was walking on campus with another student of color. A white student walked over to them and asked "So are you guys in a gang?" N replied, "Because we're black you assume that we're in a gang?" "Well yeah!", was her response.
Another student who I will call A told me about an experience after the election of president Barack Obama.
A is an African American student from New York. She was walking one day in chapel when a white student came to her and asked, "Why are black people so hype that we have a black president?"
Another student of color was in an INST 150 class when the professor asked her an appauling question. K was the onlky black student in the classroom where they were discussing Christian and secular music among college students. When K did not raise her hand to say that she had heard the same music as the other students, the professor asked her, "So K, what do black kids listen to if they don't listen to that?"
I'm not going to post my personal opinion on this topic because I'm really interested in what others think about this.
